Jumped right in. I had done very little fiction writing before hitting Magician. I had tried a couple of short stories and sent them in, but nothing to speak of; I was a novelist and just didn't realize it at the time until one of my shorts came back with the editor's note, "this is a novel in disguise."
Before that I had written a couple of humorous shorts in Midkemia, but unrelated to the novel.
